Kerala – God’s Own Country!

Kerala – God’s Own Country!

By Tranquil Samuel

“God’s own country” is the slogan of the Kerala Tourism Ministry, and how apt! This small state, located in the Deccan Peninsular region of India, is a veritable treasure of scenic beauty, martial arts, ancient medicinal systems and of course, exotic cuisine. It is a land of beaches, high mountain ranges, wild life sanctuaries, tea gardens and a strikingly colorful people.

Kerala, or Keralam as it is known locally, gets its name from “kera” which means coconuts, which are found in abundance in this state. In fact, the Malayalies – the people of Kerala, cannot do without the coconut tree! The sweet kernel is used in most of their dishes, the milky water of the coconut is savored as a nourishing drink and the true blue Malayali cannot think of cooking without the use of coconut oil. Even the trunk and leaves of the tree are put to use in making thatched huts.

Malayalam is the language spoken by the people of Kerala. As it happens with languages all over the world, there are various dialects of this language used in different parts of the state. Some of the best literature of India has come from this state. Age old traditions survive alongside an ever evolving global outlook. This also happens to be the state with the highest literacy rate in India. And the women are in the forefront in this area!

Tourism in Kerala has expanded over the last decade and it is now one of the most preferred tourist destinations of the world. According to the Kerala Tourism Ministry Report more than 95, 91,250 visited Kerala in the year 2010. The influx of tourism is all due to the ancient medical system of Ayurveda practiced here. The Ayurvedic massages are well-known for the relaxation and healing it brings.

Among the most famous of the festivals of Kerala is “Onam”, with its famous snake-boat races conducted in the backwaters of Kochi. The feast is celebrated with a grand fare of 21 vegetarian dishes. The non-vegetarian reader need not be disappointed as Kerala is equally known for its non-vegetarian cuisine especially its large variety of seafood.

I spent a part of my childhood in Kerala as both my parents were Malayalies and as I write this article I am filled with nostalgia when I think of the many happy days I spent there relishing its very air. Kerala, the land of the coconut trees, the land of the exotic, God’s very own country, beckons me for another tryst with its mysterious people and culture.
